This is a summary of my “collection” of Estonian boulders. For the first few years I lived in Estonia, I was under the impression that the only rocks worth climbing were the granite and limestone blocks used in the construction of Tallinn’s medieval walls and towers. Sure, there are limestone sea cliffs in the north and sandstone “canyons” in the south (small ones), but both are quite soft. I’ve since discovered that I just hadn’t looked in the right places.
During the ice-age, Estonia was a giant depository for all the junk glaciers were hauling under them on their slow march from the Urals down to the Baltic Sea. As a result, you can find large granite boulders all over Estonia, often in the least expected places. What I’ve been discovering is that these boulders present fantastic problems.
Check out the list I’ve created so far for descriptions and links to pictures. In the future, I’ll make a page for each one of these including a map, a photo gallery, and a list of related posts.
