2007 Summer Prayer Letter
Folks, we are very pleased to tell you that the culmination of our four years of study and preparation is just around the corner. In this letter we would like to highlight a few of the ways that we can see our ministry coming full circle, even as we are preparing to begin a new cycle.
This final summer – the only summer we have spent exclusively in North America – has been dedicated to completing the requirements for Matt’s ordination as a Presbyterian minister. During this time we have been serving alongside a Presbyterian Church in the small farming community of Reardan, Washington where Matt is doing a lot of preaching and gaining familiarity with the administrative side of church leadership. In June, Lea was invited (expense free!) to join a short-term mission team culled from churches in the area on their annual home building mission trip to Mexico. It’s been a short stint, but we have deeply appreciated the opportunities and friendships extended to us by the folk in Reardan. On September 15th, Matt will face his final examination before the presbytery. Pending their approval, he’ll be ordained as a Presbyterian minister on October 7th at Knox Presbyterian Church in Spokane. Given the opportunities that have been opened to us in Estonia, we are truly excited to be returning to full-time ministry alongside Estonian churches with these tools and training, and especially with a stronger sense of our call among and connection to Christ’s worldwide Church.
While we have been away from the field this summer, Alongside Ministries in Estonia has taken on some new and exciting shapes. For the last four years Alongside has been searching for short-term missionaries to fill two calls to rural Estonian churches. Just when we’d begun to lose hope that we would find anyone, two promising individuals submitted applications in the Spring. We have no idea where this will lead but we are encouraged that God is indeed using our organization to strengthen his Church in Estonia.
